Gynecomastia Surgery in Berlin, MD
Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia surgery, often referred to as male breast reduction, is a specialized cosmetic procedure that addresses enlarged or overdeveloped breast tissue in men. This condition, known as gynecomastia, can affect men of all ages and may cause physical discomfort as well as emotional distress. The surgery works to remove excess fat, glandular tissue, and sometimes skin to create a flatter, more sculpted chest.
Goals Of A Gynecomastia
- A flatter, firmer, and more masculine chest
- Increased confidence and comfort when shirtless
Candidates For Gynecomastia
You may be a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery if you are:
- A man or teenage male with enlarged breasts composed of fatty tissue, glandular tissue, or skin
- Experiencing discomfort or self-consciousness related to the appearance of your chest
- Physically healthy and maintaining a stable weight
- Non-smoker or willing to stop smoking before surgery to support healing
What to Expect at Your Consultation
During your consultation at Peninsula Plastic Surgery in Berlin, MD, Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens will take the time to understand your individual concerns and aesthetic goals. They will perform a focused physical examination to determine the composition of the breast tissue and assess whether excess fat, glandular tissue, or skin is contributing to the condition.
Following your evaluation, your surgeon will explain the surgical plan best suited for your case. Our aesthetic coordinator will then provide you with a comprehensive quote detailing the full cost of your surgery. This ensures you have clear and upfront information before proceeding. At this point, we will also schedule your pre-operative appointment.
Pre-Op Visit
The pre-op visit is a crucial part of the surgical preparation process. A trained medical assistant will take standardized photos to document your starting point. Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens will walk you through the surgical technique, recovery expectations, and possible risks or complications. Although any surgery carries some risk, major complications are rare.
Your complete medical history will be reviewed again to ensure there are no contraindications for surgery. A physical examination will be conducted to confirm you are in good health. All consent forms will be signed at this visit, and final payments are collected. We will contact you 24 hours before your surgery to confirm your arrival time.
The Procedure
The approach to gynecomastia surgery depends on the type and severity of the breast enlargement. If the condition is primarily due to excess fat and glandular tissue without a significant amount of loose skin, your surgeon will use liposuction and sharp dissection techniques to remove the unwanted tissue.
If there is also an excess of skin, your surgeon may incorporate skin removal techniques. This can include donut-style incisions or other configurations depending on your unique anatomy. Most gynecomastia procedures are performed using local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. Larger cases may require general anesthesia to ensure your safety and comfort during surgery.
Post-Op Recovery
Following the procedure, the surgical team will apply light dressings to the chest and may place you in a compression garment or ace bandages to help minimize swelling and support healing. Any initial discomfort can be managed with oral pain medication. Swelling and bruising are expected but typically decrease significantly over the first two weeks. Most patients feel well enough to return to work within one to two weeks, depending on the extent of the procedure and their occupation.
Surgical scars are generally small and will fade gradually over a six to twelve-month period. Our team will schedule follow-up visits to monitor your recovery and ensure that your results meet your expectations.
