Breast Reduction in Berlin, MD
Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery is a highly effective procedure that can help both women and men feel more confident in their appearance while also alleviating physical discomfort caused by overly large breasts. At Peninsula Plastic Surgery in Berlin, MD, Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens use advanced surgical techniques that not only reduce breast size but also create a lifted, more natural contour.
For many patients, breast reduction provides both cosmetic improvement and relief from chronic pain, making it one of the most rewarding procedures in plastic surgery.
Goals of a Breast Reduction
- Achieve smaller, lighter breasts for a balanced, proportionate figure

What to Expect at Your Consultation
During your consultation at Peninsula Plastic Surgery, Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens will take the time to understand your goals, review your medical history, and perform a physical exam. Based on your needs, they will recommend the most appropriate surgical plan.
Following the exam, you’ll receive a detailed cost estimate so you know exactly what to expect financially. At this point, your pre-operative appointment will also be scheduled.
Pre-Op Visit
At your pre-op appointment, a member of our clinical team will take medical photos to assist in your care. Your surgeon will then review the surgical technique, discuss recovery expectations, and explain possible risks. While all surgical procedures carry some risk, serious complications are uncommon.
A complete medical history will be taken, and a physical exam will confirm that you’re healthy enough for surgery. All consent forms are completed during this visit, and final payments are due. The day before surgery, you’ll receive a call confirming your arrival time.
The Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction is typically performed under general anesthesia, although some patients may undergo regional anesthesia or IV sedation depending on the surgical plan. Most patients return home the same day, though an overnight stay may be recommended for older patients or those with additional health concerns.
The incisions usually include one around the areola, one extending vertically to the breast crease, and sometimes one along the crease itself. In some cases, a shorter “vertical breast reduction” technique may be used to avoid the longer scar.
During surgery, the nipple and areola are repositioned higher on the chest, and excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed. Drains are often placed to prevent fluid buildup, and dressings along with a supportive garment are applied after closure.
Post-Op Recovery
After surgery, our recovery nurses will guide you and your caregiver on drain management and wound care. Discomfort is normal in the first few days but can be managed with prescribed pain medication. Most patients transition off narcotic pain relief within five days.
You’ll return for follow-up appointments 3–5 days post-surgery and again several times in the following weeks. Many patients resume desk work after two weeks and more active jobs after three weeks. Temporary changes in nipple sensitivity and minor incision healing issues are common but usually resolve with time. Scars fade over 6–12 months.
Breastfeeding may still be possible after reduction surgery, but milk production is often reduced. Supplementing with formula may be necessary in the future.
