BREAST LIFT in Berlin, MD
Breast Lift
Breast lifts, also known as mastopexies, are surgical procedures designed to restore the breast’s youthful position and natural contour. The procedure can involve several steps, including raising the nipple, reshaping the breast mound, and lifting the overall breast position to achieve a more balanced, perky appearance.
At Peninsula Plastic Surgery in Berlin, MD, Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens perform breast lift surgeries on an outpatient basis in their nationally accredited, fully certified operating suite located within the Salisbury office complex. This advanced facility allows patients to enjoy the highest level of safety, comfort, and privacy during their procedure.
For women seeking additional enhancement, breast implants can be inserted during the lift procedure to increase volume and fullness, particularly in the upper portion of the breasts. Conversely, if a patient desires smaller, lighter breasts or experiences discomfort from excess weight, a breast reduction may be the more suitable option.

The medical term is mastopexy. Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens routinely perform mastopexies as outpatient surgery, and usually do so in the certified, nationally-accredited operating room located inside the Salisbury office complex.
For women who also desire to have their breasts enlarged or desire permanent fullness of the upper poles of the breasts, the doctor also inserts breast implants during the mastopexy procedure.
On the other hand, if your breasts are larger and heavier than you would like or cause you back and shoulder pain, a breast reduction might be more appropriate for you.
Goals Of A Breast Lift

Candidates For A Breast Lift
You may be an ideal candidate for a breast lift if you:
- Have sagging breasts caused by pregnancy, weight loss, genetics, or aging
- Have drooping that cannot be corrected by implants alone
- Have nipples that appear too low, too large, or point downward or inward
- Have uneven breasts in size or shape (asymmetry)
- Have undergone partial mastectomy and radiation therapy that altered breast shape or nipple position

What to Expect at Your Consultation
Your consultation at Peninsula Plastic Surgery will focus on your specific goals, concerns, and desired outcome. Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens will perform a thorough physical examination and discuss possible treatment options that best fit your anatomy and expectations.
Once your personalized surgical plan is created, our aesthetic coordinator will provide a detailed, written estimate outlining all procedure costs so there are no surprises. At this time, your preoperative visit will also be scheduled.
Pre-Op Visit
Your preoperative visit prepares you for every aspect of your upcoming breast lift. A medical assistant will take pre-op photographs, and your surgeon will review the procedure, explaining the surgical technique, expected outcomes, and potential risks. While all surgical procedures carry some risk, major complications are rare.
Your surgeon will also take a complete medical history and perform a final physical exam, including a check of your vital signs to ensure you are medically cleared for surgery. Consent forms are reviewed and signed, final payments are processed, and you’ll receive a call 24 hours before your procedure confirming your arrival time.
The Breast Lift Procedure
A breast lift surgery usually takes place under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation combined with a local anesthetic in order to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout the procedure. Depending on the patient’s anatomy, the incision design differs based on how much sagging needs correction.
For mild cases of sagging, a Donut Lift (Periareolar) technique may be used, which involves creating a circular incision around the areola. With the Lollipop Lift (Vertical) technique, an incision is made around the areola and a vertical line is inserted down to the breast crease, giving the breast greater lift and reshaping. In more advanced cases, the Anchor Lift approach may be recommended. Using this method, the areola is circumscribed by a circular incision, the breast crease by a vertical incision, and the breast fold by a curved incision to provide a comprehensive reshaping and tightening.
Once the incisions are made, the nipple-areolar complex is repositioned to a higher, more youthful location, and excess skin is removed. It is necessary to reshape and lift the remaining breast tissue in order to create a firmer, more defined contour. If additional fullness is desired, a breast implant can be placed during the same procedure to enhance volume, particularly in the upper portion of the breast. For patients seeking smaller breasts, some of the existing tissue can be removed to achieve a more proportionate size.
After the lift is completed, the incisions are meticulously closed in layers to support proper healing and minimize scarring. Finally, the surgical team applies sterile dressings and fits the patient with a supportive postoperative bra or compression bandage to provide comfort and maintain the new breast shape during recovery.
Post-Op Recovery
Most patients can return home the same day, wearing a compression garment or surgical bra. This garment should remain in place until your surgeon advises that it can be removed. Mild discomfort and swelling are normal and easily managed with oral pain medication. Most patients return to light activities within 5–10 days. Follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your healing progress and ensure optimal results.
FAQs
Who is a good candidate?
Ideal candidates are women with sagging or uneven breasts due to aging, pregnancy, or weight loss, as well as those seeking correction after breast cancer treatment or reconstruction.
When will I see the results?
Improvements are visible immediately, though final results appear over several months as swelling subsides and the breasts settle into their new shape.
How long do the results last?
While results are long-lasting, aging, gravity, and weight changes can gradually alter the shape over time. Routine follow-ups are recommended to monitor your results and maintain breast health.
What should I do before and after surgery?
Follow all pre-op instructions from your surgeon, including any diet or medication adjustments. After surgery, wear your support garments as directed, avoid strenuous activity, and attend all follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth recovery.
Is there any downtime or side effects?
Plan for 5–10 days of downtime, with some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort that subsides with medication. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for several weeks.
What can I expect overall?
Your consultation will focus on your unique goals and anatomy. The surgery involves anesthesia, carefully placed incisions, and reshaping of breast tissue. Recovery includes wearing dressings and a support garment, with regular follow-ups to ensure optimal healing and long-lasting, natural results.
