Body Contouring Arm Lift

The skin on the upper arms can begin to hang as a result of aging or significant weight loss. An arm lift (brachioplasty) can restore the arms to a thinner, tighter, more youthful appearance. Top Salisbury plastic surgeons Drs. Perrotta and Pellegrino have a great deal of experience performing successful arm lift procedures. Note that if you desire to thin your entire body, you should undergo a weight loss and exercise program prior to any surgery.

Candidates for Brachioplasty

  • Individuals who have excess skin hanging from their arms, which might be due to weight loss from dieting, exercise, gastric bypass surgery, lap band surgery, liposuction, or maturity
  • Individuals with fat deposits on their arms

The Goals of an Arm Lift

  • Thinner, more attractive arms with tighter skin
  • Arms with more muscle definition
  • Greater self-confidence when baring the upper arms

Initial Consultation for Brachioplasty

Drs. Pellegrino and Perrotta have developed a sensitive and discreet process for preparing you for arm lift surgery. Your consultation is important because you and your plastic surgeon must be “on the same page” regarding the results you want. This is why Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Pellegrino will devote as much time as necessary to discuss your individual goals and needs with you. Dr. Pellegrino or Dr. Perrotta performs a focused physical examination to provide preliminary recommendations. Once he determines his surgical plan, our aesthetic coordinator will produce a written quote which lists all costs of your proposed surgery so that there are no surprises. At that time, an appointment is set for your pre-op visit.

Pre-Op Visit

Much is covered during your pre-op visit. First, one of our highly trained medical assistants will take pre-op photos. Next, your surgeon will explain the surgical technique to you and thoroughly inform you as to what you can expect, including any potential complications. Note that all procedures involve some risk, but major complications from an arm lift are rare. Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Pellegrino will then obtain a more complete medical history from you and perform a final pre-op physical examination, including a check of your vital functions to ensure that you are physically fit for surgery. Prior to releasing you from your pre-op visit, your doctor and our staff will give you detailed instructions for the time leading up to your surgery, as well as for the time immediately following it.

The Brachioplasty Procedure

Drs. Pellegrino and Perrotta perform brachioplasty on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. They place the incisions on the inside surfaces of the arms so that any scars will be hidden as much as possible. Excess skin is then removed. If excess fat is also to be removed, liposuction is performed on the arms at the same time. Drains are not necessary after an arm lift. Our staff then dresses your incisions and places an elastic garment on your arms.

Post-Op Recovery

You can go home the same day wearing the dressings and the elastic garment. Any initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral pain medication. Swelling and bruising subsides within 2-3 weeks, and you should be able to return to work and other activities within two weeks after your surgery. Sutures either dissolve on their own or may need to be removed in 3-5 days during a post-operative visit. After your procedure, you will follow up with us several times so that we can monitor your healing.
