Rhinoplasty in Berlin, MD

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose reshaping procedure or “nose job,” is one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeries in the United States. It can refine the appearance of the nose, improve balance among facial features, and, in many cases, enhance breathing function. Because every nose is unique, each rhinoplasty requires precision, artistry, and extensive surgical experience.

Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens at Peninsula Plastic Surgery in Berlin, MD, have performed countless successful rhinoplasty procedures for both men and women. With extensive experience and the use of advanced surgical techniques, they customize each procedure to complement the patient’s unique facial proportions and aesthetic goals. Beyond aesthetic refinement, rhinoplasty can also correct structural issues such as a deviated septum or internal nasal obstruction, improving airflow and overall respiratory comfort.

Goals Of Rhinoplasty

Candidates For Rhinoplasty

You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you:

During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your nasal structure, facial proportions, and breathing function to determine the most effective surgical plan.

What to Expect at Your Consultation

Your consultation is the first step toward achieving your ideal results. During your appointment, Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens will discuss your goals, review your medical history, and examine your nose and facial structure. According to your needs, they will recommend a suitable surgical approach and explain what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

After your surgeon finalizes the treatment plan, our aesthetic coordinator will provide a written estimate that clearly outlines all associated costs. This ensures you have full transparency before proceeding. Your preoperative appointment will also be scheduled during this time.

Pre-Op Visit

Much is covered during your pre-op visit. First, one of our highly trained medical assistants will take pre-op photos. Next, your surgeon will explain the surgical technique to you and thoroughly inform you as to what you can expect, including any potential complications. Note that all procedures involve some risk, but major complications are rare. Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens will then obtain a more complete medical history from you and perform a final pre-op physical examination, including a check of your vital functions to ensure that you are physically fit for surgery. All informed consents for surgery will be filled out at this appointment, and final payments are due at this time.  You will be notified 24 hours prior to your surgery with your arrival time.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis at our fully accredited surgical suite using either sedation with local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Depending on the case, the procedure usually lasts one to two hours.

There are two primary techniques used in rhinoplasty:

  • Closed Rhinoplasty: In this approach, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no external scars. This technique is typically recommended for patients requiring subtle refinements, such as hump reduction or minor tip reshaping.

  • Open Rhinoplasty: For more extensive reshaping, an open rhinoplasty is often preferred. This method involves a small incision across the columella (the narrow tissue strip between the nostrils) along with internal incisions. This approach provides enhanced visibility and control, allowing the surgeon to make precise adjustments to the nasal tip, bridge, and structure.

Post-Op Recovery

After your rhinoplasty, you’ll return home the same day with an external splint or cast in place to support the new nasal shape. Some patients may have internal packing for 24–48 hours. The splint is generally removed within 7–14 days, and most swelling and bruising subside significantly within a few weeks.

Mild discomfort can be easily managed with prescribed pain medication. During follow-up visits, your surgeon will monitor your healing progress and ensure your results are as expected.

Health Insurance

Health insurance may cover your rhinoplasty if you undergo rhinoplasty to fix a breathing issue, such as a deviated septum or nasal obstruction, as part of your rhinoplasty procedure. Cosmetic-only enhancements, however, are typically considered elective and not covered.

FAQs

Rhinoplasty is ideal for individuals unhappy with the shape, size, or balance of their nose, as well as those with breathing difficulties caused by internal nasal structures.

While initial changes are noticeable immediately after the splint is removed, the final rhinoplasty results typically become apparent after the swelling subsides over several months.

Rhinoplasty provides permanent results. Once the nasal structure is reshaped, the improvements last a lifetime unless impacted by injury or trauma.

Before surgery, patients should follow all preoperative instructions, including adjustments to medication and fasting protocols. After surgery, it is crucial to rest, avoid strenuous activities, and follow all postoperative care instructions to support proper healing and achieve the best results.

Most patients return home the same day. Temporary swelling, bruising, and nasal congestion are normal. Typically, nasal splints are worn for one to two weeks, and activities can resume soon after removal.

An evaluation of the nose will be conducted by your surgeon during your consultation, along with a discussion of your aesthetic goals. The procedure may be performed using either a closed or open technique, depending on your needs. Postoperative visits will help ensure your healing process is smooth and that your final results meet your expectations.
