Microneedling / SkinPen®
Microneedling / SkinPen®
At Peninsula Plastic Surgery in Berlin, MD, we offer advanced microneedling treatments using the SkinPen®, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device for skin rejuvenation. It improves the texture, tone, and overall quality of your skin while stimulating your body’s natural healing process.
The SkinPen® works by creating controlled microchannels in the skin’s surface. By puncturing the skin, you stimulate the body to produce collagen and elastin, the two crucial proteins that make up firm, youthful skin. The healing process smooths, tightens, and makes the skin more radiant. By using microneedling, you can reduce fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven tone, as well as restore lost volume and increase firmness. There are several areas that can be treated, including the face, neck, and other areas.
RF Microneedling / VirtueRF
VirtueRF Microneedling is the next generation of skin rejuvenation technology, combining traditional microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy to deliver more powerful and precise results. Known as one of the most advanced RF microneedling platforms available, VirtueRF allows our providers to customize treatments using three specialized handpieces, each designed to target different areas and depths of the skin.
The treatment works by inserting sterile microneedles into the dermis to create micro-injuries that stimulate new collagen and elastin production. At the same time, radiofrequency energy is delivered to heat the deeper layers of skin, enhancing tightening and toning effects. This dual approach effectively reduces fine lines, improves skin laxity, and promotes a smoother, more youthful complexion.
VirtueRF offers three treatment modes:
- Exact RF: Ideal for delicate areas such as the mouth, eyes, and jawline, where precision is essential.
- Smart RF: Improves fine lines, wrinkles, and loose skin on the neck and décolleté.
- Deep RF: Targets larger body areas such as the abdomen, thighs, arms, and glutes for improved firmness and texture.
Goals of Microneedling
- Reduce acne scars and surface irregularities
- Diminish the appearance of stretch marks
- Stimulate collagen and elastin for firmer, thicker skin
- Minimize fine lines and wrinkles for a more youthful appearance
Candidates for Microneedling
Ideal candidates for microneedling include individuals with:
- Mild to moderate skin laxity
- Uneven skin texture or tone
- Acne scarring or post-inflammatory pigmentation
- Fine lines and wrinkles
Benefits of Microneedling
- Reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and scars

Microneedling with PRP
Microneedling with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) combines the collagen-stimulating effects of microneedling with the regenerative power of your body’s own platelets. During this treatment, a small amount of your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma. A concentrated PRP solution rich in growth factors is applied to the skin right after microneedling.
This process enhances cell turnover and accelerates healing, resulting in more dramatic improvements in texture, tone, and firmness. PRP helps increase collagen and elastin production, reduce scars and pigmentation, and restore a youthful glow to the skin.
PRP for the Face
A PRP facial can be especially beneficial for patients seeking to treat wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, or scarring. By reintroducing PRP into the skin, new cell growth is stimulated, improving elasticity and promoting smoother, more radiant skin. Patients often notice firmer, fuller, and healthier-looking skin as collagen production continues to increase over the following weeks.
Goals of PRP for the Face
- Boost collagen and elastin production
- Tighten and smooth the skin
- Improve the overall quality and radiance of the complexion
Candidates for PRP for the Face
- Individuals with fine lines or wrinkles
- Those with sun-damaged or uneven skin tone
- Patients seeking natural skin rejuvenation without downtime
Benefits of PRP for the Face
- Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
- Restores smoother, more even skin tone
- Diminishes sun damage and scars
PRP for Hair Loss
The PRP hair restoration procedure is a non-surgical, three-step procedure that uses your own platelet-rich plasma to stimulate hair growth. Once the blood sample has been drawn, it is processed to concentrate the growth factors before being injected directly into the scalp. PRP improves blood circulation and strengthens existing hair while promoting the growth of new strands.
This therapy is ideal for both men and women experiencing thinning hair or early-stage hair loss. Three treatments should be spaced several weeks apart, with maintenance treatments as needed.
Goals of PRP for Hair Loss
- Stimulate natural hair regrowth
- Improve blood flow and nutrient delivery to hair follicles
- Increase hair density and thickness
Candidates for PRP for Hair Loss
- Men and women with recent hair thinning (within the last 5 years)
- Individuals with mild to moderate alopecia
Benefits of PRP for Hair Loss
- Encourages thicker, stronger hair growth
- Rejuvenates hair follicles naturally
- Delivers long-lasting, noticeable results
FAQs
Who is a good candidate?
Microneedling and PRP treatments are suitable for improving skin texture, reducing wrinkles and scars, and restoring a youthful appearance. PRP therapy for hair loss is effective for those with thinning hair or mild baldness.
When will I see results?
Initial results may appear a few weeks after your first session, with continued improvement as collagen builds. The best results are usually seen after a series of treatments spaced four to six weeks apart.
How long do results last?
Results vary by individual, but microneedling effects can last several months to years. Maintenance treatments help preserve your outcome, while PRP enhances longevity, especially for hair restoration.
What should I do before and after?
Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements before treatment to minimize bruising. Afterward, protect the skin from sun exposure, avoid harsh skincare products, and follow your provider’s post-care instructions.
Is there downtime or side effects?
Microneedling has minimal downtime. You may experience redness, mild swelling, or sensitivity for a few days. PRP can cause temporary bruising at the injection or blood draw site, but these effects resolve quickly.
What can I expect?
Your treatment begins with the application of a numbing cream for comfort. The SkinPen or VirtueRF device creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen production. If PRP is used, the concentrated plasma is applied or injected to enhance healing and rejuvenation. The full session lasts 30–60 minutes, including PRP preparation.
