What to Expect at your Consultation

Drs. Perrotta and Luppens will devote as much time as necessary to discuss your individual goals and needs with you. After a focused physical examination, your surgeon will provide preliminary recommendations and explain what you can expect from surgery.

Once your surgeon determines his surgical plan, our aesthetic coordinator will produce a written quote, which lists all costs of your proposed surgery so that there are no surprises. At that time, an appointment is set for your pre-op visit.

Pre-Op Visit

Much is covered during your pre-op visit. First, one of our highly trained medical assistants will take pre-op photos. Next, your surgeon will explain the surgical technique to you and thoroughly inform you as to what you can expect, including any potential complications. Note that all procedures involve some risk, but major complications are rare. Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens will then obtain a more complete medical history from you and perform a final pre-op physical examination, including a check of your vital functions to ensure that you are physically fit for surgery. All informed consents for surgery will be filled out at this appointment and final payments are due at this time. You will be notified 24 hours prior to your surgery with your arrival time.

The Liposuction Procedure

Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens usually perform this procedure on an outpatient basis. However, on those occasions when a great deal of fat is to be removed, they may prefer to keep you in the hospital overnight for observation. They usually use IV sedation and local anesthesia for the procedure, but some patients opt for general anesthesia. You might do well with local anesthetic alone, an approach which saves you a significant amount of money on the total cost of liposuction.

The procedure is quite simple. First, a solution is injected that numbs the area and prevents excessive bleeding. Next, small suction tubes (cannulas) are inserted through tiny (3mm) incisions, and the excess fat is removed. The inserted end of one of these cannulas is blunt, a feature that makes them safe, provided they are used by a qualified plastic surgeon and not family doctors or internists who have merely taken a weekend course in liposuction procedures. The other end of the cannula is attached, via a flexible hose, to a specialized machine that provides the vacuum that sucks out the fat.

Drs. Perrotta and Luppens use special techniques that ensure your results are as smooth as possible. The tiny incisions are closed, and our nursing staff applies a compression garment that controls post-operative swelling and bruising.

Post-Op Recovery

Unless your surgeon tells you that you will need to spend a night in the hospital, you can go home the same day wearing the compression garment. The compression needs to continue for about a month. Any initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral pain medication. Bruising and swelling usually subside in 2-4 weeks. The final results take shape over the 2-3 months after your liposuction surgery. After your procedure, you will follow up with us several times so that we can monitor your healing.

FAQ’s

Ideal candidates for liposuction are men and women with excess fat who resistant to diet and exercise and seek improved body contours and proportions.

Initial liposuction results are noticeable shortly after the procedure, but the final, more defined outcomes are visible after swelling and bruising have subsided, usually over several weeks to months.

Results from liposuction can be long-lasting, provided you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. The procedure permanently removes fat cells, but weight gain can still impact appearance.

Before the procedure, you may need to avoid certain medications and prepare according to your surgeon’s instructions. Post-operatively, following care instructions, including wearing compression garments and managing activity levels to ensure optimal healing, is essential.

Recovery from liposuction can vary; some may return to work within a few days, while others may need more time. Side effects include swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Significant complications are rare but can include infection and irregular contours.

The liposuction procedure involves injecting a solution to numb the area and minimize bleeding, then removing excess fat through small incisions using suction tubes (cannulas). Depending on the patient’s preference, the procedure may be performed under various forms of anesthesia. Post-surgery, wearing a compression garment is necessary to control swelling and shape the treated areas.
