What to Expect at your Consultation

Drs. Perrotta and Luppens will devote as much time as necessary to discuss your individual goals and needs with you. After a focused physical examination, your surgeon will provide preliminary recommendations and explain what you can expect from surgery.

Once your surgeon determines his surgical plan, our aesthetic coordinator will produce a written quote, which lists all costs of your proposed surgery so that there are no surprises. At that time, an appointment is set for your pre-op visit.

Pre-Op Visit

Much is covered during your pre-op visit. First, one of our highly trained medical assistants will take pre-op photos. Next, your surgeon will explain the surgical technique to you and thoroughly inform you as to what you can expect, including any potential complications. Note that all procedures involve some risk, but major complications are rare. Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens will then obtain a more complete medical history from you and perform a final pre-op physical examination, including a check of your vital functions to ensure that you are physically fit for surgery. All informed consents for surgery will be filled out at this appointment and final payments are due at this time.  You will be notified 24 hours prior to your surgery with your arrival time.

The Liposuction Procedure

Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens usually perform this procedure on an outpatient basis. However, on those occasions when a great deal of fat is to be removed, they may prefer to keep you in the hospital overnight for observation. They usually use IV sedation and local anesthesia for the procedure, but some patients opt for general anesthesia. You might do well with local anesthetic alone, an approach which saves you a significant amount of money on the total cost of liposuction.

The procedure is quite simple. First, a solution is injected that numbs the area and prevents excessive bleeding. Next, small suction tubes (cannulas) are inserted through tiny (3mm) incisions, and the excess fat is removed. The inserted end of one of these cannulas is blunt, a feature that makes them safe, provided they are used by a qualified plastic surgeon and not family doctors or internists who have merely taken a weekend course in liposuction procedures. The other end of the cannula is attached, via a flexible hose, to a specialized machine that provides the vacuum that sucks out the fat.

Drs. Perrotta and Luppens use special techniques that ensure your results are as smooth as possible. The tiny incisions are closed, and our nursing staff applies a compression garment that controls post-operative swelling and bruising.

Post-Op Recovery

Unless your surgeon tells you that you will need to spend a night in the hospital, you can go home the same day wearing the compression garment. The compression needs to continue for about a month. Any initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral pain medication. Bruising and swelling usually subside in 2-4 weeks. The final results take shape over the 2-3 months after your liposuction surgery. After your procedure, you will follow up with us several times so that we can monitor your healing.

LASER LIPOSUCTION

Laser Liposuction (also called Smart Liposuction, SmartLipo, Slim Lipo, Lipotherme, laser-assisted lipolysis, and Laserpro) is a minimally invasive procedure to remove small accumulations of fat and smooth areas that contain cellulite. This state-of-the-art process is like melting butter, and as compared to other forms of liposuction, produces a smoother result. Drs. Perrotta and Luppens utilize this melting effect of the laser to correct contour irregularities resulting from previous surgeries, and it enables them to effectively treat cellulite and tighten the skin.

The Laser Liposuction Procedure

Your surgeon will anesthetize the area he intends to correct.  He then inserts a cannula (blunt metal tube) under the skin, and the laser light energy heats the fat cells, liquefying them. The controlled heat that the laser produces causes the skin to retract, which creates a skin tightening effect. Additional benefits of this cutting edge technology include less post-operative bruising and shorter downtime after the procedure.

Post Procedure Recovery

Results from laser liposuction generally begin to show up within 1-2 weeks of treatment and continue to improve for 12-16 weeks or even several months. One of the main advantages of Lipotherme is that there is little downtime required. You can return to work and other activities the next day, but exercise and strenuous activities should be avoided for a few days.

POWER ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION
PAL

Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL) is an ideal body contouring procedure for removing fat from the breasts, love handles, and the upper abdomen because the fat they contain is very fibrous. This type of fat is very difficult to remove with conventional liposuction.

In the hands of Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens, PAL removes fat more rapidly than any other method. So, we use PAL to reduce love handles and breasts in men or whenever we need to remove large volumes of fat (2000-5000 ml) from any part of the body. The other advantage of PAL is faster recovery time and less post-procedure bruising and swelling than with traditional liposuction.

The Power Assisted Liposuction Procedure

The PAL device produces very fine, controlled oscillations of the suction cannula (tube), which greatly enhances removal of fibrous fat. It also reduces surgeon fatigue. Most PAL procedures can be done with IV sedation and a local anesthetic. You might do well with local anesthesia alone, an approach which saves you a significant amount of money on the total cost of liposuction.
