Fat Grafting in Berlin, MD

Fat Grafting

Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer or fat injections, is a natural alternative to synthetic dermal fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, and Sculptra. This procedure involves removing excess fat from one area of the body and re-injecting it into facial areas that have lost volume due to aging. Both the fat extraction and the injection are performed in a single session, making this a comprehensive and efficient rejuvenation treatment.

Ideal candidates for fat grafting include:

What to Expect at Your Consultation

At Peninsula Plastic Surgery, your consultation will be conducted by either Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens. They will take the time to listen to your goals and evaluate your facial structure and skin condition. Following a focused physical examination, your surgeon will discuss a customized treatment plan that aligns with your aesthetic goals.

Our experienced aesthetic coordinator will provide you with a detailed quote outlining all costs associated with the procedure. This ensures transparency, so you have a clear understanding of your investment. At this stage, we will also schedule your pre-operative visit.

Pre-Op Visit

Your pre-op appointment covers several important steps. A member of our clinical team will take a full set of pre-operative photographs to document your starting point. Your surgeon will then explain the technique to be used and review potential risks and outcomes. While all surgical procedures carry some risk, major complications from fat grafting are uncommon.

During this visit, a thorough medical history will be reviewed, and your vital signs will be checked to confirm you are medically fit for surgery. All surgical consent forms will be completed, and final payment is due at this time. You will be contacted 24 hours before your procedure to confirm your arrival time.

The Fat Grafting Procedure

Fat grafting is typically performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia, IV sedation, or regional nerve blocks. Local anesthesia alone is not preferred, as it can distort the tissues being treated and affect precision during injection.

The process begins with harvesting fat from a donor site such as the abdomen, flanks, or thighs using gentle liposuction. The collected fat is then purified to remove any non-viable tissue. Once processed, the fat is meticulously injected into the targeted facial areas using fine cannulas to achieve a natural and balanced result.

Post-Op Recovery

After your procedure, you will be discharged with a compression garment or elastic bandages over the fat donor area to reduce swelling and support healing. The injection sites on the face typically do not require bandaging. Most patients experience mild discomfort, which is well managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.

Swelling and bruising are expected and usually subside within two to four weeks. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled so that we can monitor your healing progress and ensure optimal results.

It is normal for approximately 25 percent of the injected fat to be reabsorbed by the body over time. Because of this, some patients may choose to undergo periodic touch-up treatments to maintain their desired look.

FAQ’s

Good candidates include individuals with visible volume loss in the face, such as under-eye hollows, sunken cheeks, or thinning lips. If you are in good overall health and seeking a natural filler option, fat grafting may be ideal for you.

Results are noticeable soon after the swelling and bruising decrease, typically within two to four weeks. Because some fat is naturally reabsorbed, final results become more apparent over time.

Fat grafting offers long-lasting results, but it is important to understand that some of the transferred fat will be reabsorbed. A portion of the fat becomes permanent, but periodic maintenance sessions may be required to sustain your outcome.

Pre-procedure instructions include avoiding certain medications and fasting as directed. After surgery, it is essential to wear your compression garment, minimize swelling with cold compresses, and follow your post-op care plan to enhance fat cell survival.

You can return home the same day. Mild bruising, swelling, and soreness in both donor and injection areas are normal and typically resolve within a few weeks. Strenuous activities should be avoided initially, but most normal daily activities can resume within a few days.

From the initial consultation to your final follow-up, Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens will provide compassionate, personalized care. Fat is harvested, processed, and injected with precision to restore a refreshed, natural-looking appearance. Multiple follow-ups help track your healing and allow for any necessary refinements.
