Facelift in Berlin, MD

Facelift

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is one of the most effective cosmetic procedures for reversing visible signs of aging in the face and neck. Over time, skin loses elasticity and firmness, leading to sagging, deep wrinkles, and jowls. A facelift restores youthful contours by tightening underlying tissues, removing excess skin, and repositioning facial structures for a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

Blending surgical precision with an artistic eye, Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens at Peninsula Plastic Surgery in Berlin, MD, approach each facelift as a unique opportunity to restore natural beauty and confidence. By carefully tailoring every procedure to the patient’s facial structure and aesthetic goals, they achieve refreshed, youthful results that look effortless and refined. Their meticulous techniques focus on enhancing contours and minimizing scarring, allowing patients to enjoy smooth, lasting rejuvenation without an artificial appearance.

Candidates For A Facelift

You may be an ideal candidate for facelift surgery if you:

What to Expect at Your Consultation

At your private consultation, Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens will examine your facial structure and discuss your cosmetic goals so they can recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Following an in-depth physical examination, your surgeon will explain the techniques that can best achieve your desired outcome.

Once the surgical plan is determined, our aesthetic coordinator will prepare a detailed written quote outlining all procedure costs. At this time, your preoperative appointment will be scheduled

Pre-Op Visit

Your pre-op visit is an important step in ensuring a safe and successful experience. A trained medical assistant will take preoperative photos for documentation and reference. Your surgeon will review your treatment plan, discuss recovery expectations, and go over any potential risks.

A full medical history and physical exam will be performed to confirm you are ready for surgery.

All consent forms will be completed, final payments will be arranged, and you’ll receive a confirmation call 24 hours prior to surgery with your check-in time and preparation instructions.

The Facelift Procedure

Most facelift surgeries are performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation or under general anesthesia, depending on your comfort level and the extent of your procedure. During the surgery, Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens make careful incisions within the natural hairline above the ear, extending down around the earlobe and behind the ear into the hairline. Some patients may require additional small incisions beneath the chin for enhanced contouring. Through these openings, the surgeons lift and reposition the underlying tissues, tighten facial muscles, and remove excess skin to smooth and firm the facial profile.

Once the adjustments are complete, the skin is carefully redraped over the newly refined contours, and the incisions are closed with fine sutures. A soft, supportive dressing is applied to minimize swelling and protect the area during the early stages of recovery. This technique allows for dramatic yet natural results, restoring youthful definition while maintaining each patient’s unique facial character.

Post-Op Recovery

Most patients return home the same day after surgery with their head and neck wrapped in gentle dressings. These are typically removed during the first postoperative visit. Mild discomfort is easily managed with prescribed medication.

Sutures near the front hairline are removed within 3–5 days, while sutures and staples behind the hairline are usually removed after one to three weeks. Most swelling and bruising improve significantly within 10–20 days, and the final results become visible after about four to six weeks, with subtle improvements continuing for several months.

To help maintain your rejuvenated look, your providers may recommend a personalized skincare regimen, chemical peels, or laser treatments to keep your skin healthy and vibrant.

Mini Face Lift

A mini facelift, sometimes called a “quick lift” or “S-lift,” is a less invasive version of the traditional facelift. It focuses on rejuvenating the lower third of the face and neck with shorter incisions and a faster recovery time.

During a mini facelift, Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens make small incisions concealed around the sideburns and along the natural contours of the ears. With these incisions, the underlying tissues are tightened, excess skin is eliminated, and the skin is repositioned for a smoother, firmer appearance.

This approach offers excellent improvement in early signs of aging for patients who may not need a full facelift. As a rule of thumb, most patients are able to return to normal activities within 10-14 days.

What to Expect at your Consultation

After a focused physical examination, your surgeon will provide preliminary recommendations and explain what you can expect from surgery.

Once your surgeon determines his surgical plan, our aesthetic coordinator will produce a written quote, which lists all costs of your proposed surgery so that there are no surprises. At that time, an appointment is set for your pre-op visit.

Pre-Op Visit

Much is covered during your pre-op visit. First, one of our highly trained medical assistants will take pre-op photos. Next, your surgeon will explain the surgical technique to you and thoroughly inform you as to what you can expect, including any potential complications. Note that all procedures involve some risk, but major complications are rare. Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens will then obtain a more complete medical history from you and perform a final pre-op physical examination, including a check of your vital functions to ensure that you are physically fit for surgery. All informed consents for surgery will be filled out at this appointment and final payments are due at this time.  You will be notified 24 hours prior to your surgery with your arrival time.

The Mini Face Lift Procedure

Mini face lifts are performed with local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia. Some patients require only local anesthesia.

The majority of our mini face lifts are performed in the certified operating room located inside our Salisbury office complex so that you can experience absolute privacy and convenience.

Your surgeon will hide your incisions under the sideburns and along the natural contours of the front of the ear. In some cases and depending on your specific goals, the incisions are extended up to the temples and around the back of the ears.

Your surgeon then elevates the skin so that it can be trimmed and re-draped. The deep layers are tightened, including muscle and fascia. In our experience, the cutting-edge techniques used by Drs. Perrotta and Luppens in this portion of the procedure provide much longer lasting results than those achieved by a LifeStyle Lift.

When closing the wounds, the surgeon uses very specialized techniques and the utmost precision, both of which greatly minimize visible scarring. Finally, a soft, bulky dressing is applied to the incisions.

Post-Op Recovery

You should be able to go home the day of surgery, with your head and neck wrapped in bulky dressings or a thin, elastic garment. The dressings are usually removed within a couple of days during a post-op visit. Any initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral pain medication. Your surgeon will remove the visible sutures in 3-7 days and hidden ones in 3-10 days.

Bruising and swelling decrease to “socially acceptable” levels within 7-21 days. After performing hundreds of face lifts in our Salisbury office complex, our surgeon has found that our patients who have undergone a mini face lift are comfortable returning to work in 10-14 days, whereas this period is three weeks following a full face lift. The final result of your mini facelift will be evident in approximately 4-6 weeks or sooner, with continued improvement for several months.

After your procedure, you will follow up with us several times so that we can monitor your healing. To maintain the results of your mini face lift for as long as possible, we recommend a sound skin care program, periodic chemical peels, and/or specialized laser treatments.
