Breast Reconstruction in Berlin, MD

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a specialized area of plastic surgery focused on restoring the breast’s shape, symmetry, and natural appearance following a lumpectomy or mastectomy. It also includes procedures that correct congenital breast deformities or asymmetry caused by trauma or disease.

With years of specialized experience and advanced surgical expertise, Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens provide exceptional results in breast reconstruction at Peninsula Plastic Surgery in Berlin, MD. Their precise techniques and patient-centered approach help restore natural breast contours, balance, and confidence for those recovering from breast cancer treatment or other breast conditions.

The surgeons also perform nipple-sparing mastectomy reconstructions, a specialized technique that allows eligible women to retain their natural nipple and areola for a more natural final result.

What to Expect at Your Consultation

Your consultation with Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens will focus on your personal goals, medical history, and surgical options. Following a physical examination, your surgeon will discuss the appropriate reconstruction techniques, the timing, and the expected outcomes.

Once a customized plan is established, our aesthetic coordinator will provide a written quote detailing all costs for complete transparency. At this time, your pre-operative visit will be scheduled to finalize your surgical preparations.

Pre-Op Visit

Your pre-op visit prepares you for surgery day. A trained medical assistant will take pre-operative photographs for your record. Your surgeon will review the procedure in depth, including surgical techniques, anesthesia options, and recovery expectations. There is always a risk associated with surgery, but serious complications are rare.

In addition, a physical exam and medical history will be performed to ensure that you are in good health prior to surgery. During this visit, all consent forms will be signed, final payments will be completed, and you’ll receive a call 24 hours before your procedure with your scheduled arrival time.

The Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens are highly skilled in both implant-based and autologous tissue reconstruction techniques, allowing them to tailor each procedure to meet the unique needs and goals of every patient.

In implant-based reconstruction, the process typically begins with the placement of a tissue expander to gradually stretch the skin and create space for a permanent implant. This expander may be placed immediately after a mastectomy or at a later time, depending on the patient’s treatment plan. About two weeks after placement, the expander is filled with saline at regular intervals until the desired size is reached. This process usually takes around three months to complete. Once the skin has stretched adequately, the surgeon performs a second procedure to replace the expander with a saline or silicone implant. In some cases, the tissue expander can remain as the permanent implant, allowing the patient to avoid an additional surgery.

Another highly effective method is TRAM flap reconstruction, which uses tissue from the lower abdomen, including skin, fat, and muscle, to create the new breast. This procedure usually lasts five to seven hours and produces a natural-looking breast while also flattening and tightening the abdomen. Many patients appreciate that the TRAM flap reconstruction provides a softer and more natural feel compared to an implant-based result.

A Latissimus Dorsi reconstruction involves using the latissimus dorsi muscle from the upper back along with a small section of overlying skin. This tissue is carefully tunneled to the chest and positioned over a breast implant, creating a smooth and natural appearance. Although this technique leaves a scar on the back, it offers excellent coverage and a very natural contour.

The Perforator Flap technique allows surgeons to transfer skin and fat from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks without removing any muscle. This approach preserves strength in the donor area and reduces the risk of complications while still producing a natural and symmetrical breast.

After the breast reconstruction process is complete, many patients choose to have nipple and areola reconstruction to enhance the final appearance and achieve a balanced, natural look.

Post-Op Recovery

Recovery time varies depending on the reconstruction technique used. Patients undergoing implant-based reconstruction typically return to normal daily activities or work within about two weeks. Recovery from flap procedures, such as TRAM or Latissimus Dorsi reconstructions, takes longer, generally four to six weeks.

During the healing process, Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Luppens will schedule several follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure optimal results. They also offer complimentary annual checkups to assess the breasts for any signs of capsular contracture, implant movement, or other changes.

FAQ’s

Ideal candidates include women who have undergone mastectomy or lumpectomy, women with congenital or acquired breast deformities, or those at high risk for breast cancer seeking preventive mastectomy and reconstruction.

Reconstructed breast shape is visible immediately after surgery, but the final results take shape over several months as swelling subsides and tissues settle.

Breast reconstruction results are long-lasting, though natural aging, weight fluctuations, or implant-related changes can affect appearance over time.

Before surgery, follow all pre-operative instructions, including fasting and medication adjustments. After surgery, carefully follow your recovery plan, wear recommended support garments, and attend all follow-up visits.

Recovery varies, approximately two weeks for implant-based reconstruction and up to six weeks for flap procedures. Common side effects include mild swelling, bruising, or soreness, which subside with time. Long-term follow-up ensures lasting results and implant integrity.

During consultation, your surgeon will discuss the best reconstruction approach for your goals and anatomy. Procedures are performed under anesthesia, and incisions vary depending on the technique. After surgery, regular follow-ups help ensure proper healing and long-term satisfaction with your reconstructed breasts.
