What to Expect at Your Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Luppens will take the time to discuss your individual concerns and goals in detail. After performing a thorough examination of your ears and facial proportions, your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate technique to achieve a natural and balanced result.

Once your personalized surgical plan is developed, our aesthetic coordinator will provide a written quote outlining the costs of your proposed procedure to ensure transparency. At that time, your preoperative appointment will also be scheduled.

Pre-Op Visit

Your preoperative visit is designed to prepare you for your upcoming surgery and ensure you are fully informed. During this appointment, a medical assistant will take pre-op photos for your chart. Your surgeon will explain the surgical process, review recovery expectations, and discuss potential risks. Although all surgical procedures carry some degree of risk, major complications are rare.

Your surgeon will also complete a final review of your medical history and perform a preoperative physical exam, including a check of your vital signs. During this visit, informed consent forms will be signed, final payments will be processed, and you’ll receive a confirmation call 24 hours before your surgery with your arrival time and instructions.

The Otoplasty Procedure

For adult patients, otoplasty is often performed in-office using local anesthesia, though IV sedation or general anesthesia can be provided if preferred. Children, on the other hand, typically require general anesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure.

The surgery generally takes one to two hours and involves reshaping or repositioning the ears to achieve a more natural appearance. The surgeon may reduce excess cartilage, refine the ear folds, or pin the ears closer to the head to correct protrusion. In some cases, fine drains may be placed temporarily to prevent the buildup of blood or fluid beneath the skin, which helps avoid complications such as “cauliflower ear.”

Once the reshaping is complete, a soft head wrap is applied to protect the ears, maintain their new position, and minimize swelling during the initial healing period.

Post-Op Recovery

Patients return home the same day as their surgery. Initial discomfort is mild and can be easily managed with prescribed oral pain medication. To promote optimal healing, patients should sleep with their head elevated and use ice packs during the first 48 hours to reduce swelling.

All patients are prescribed a short course of oral antibiotics for approximately five days to prevent infection. The head wrap, stitches, and any drains are typically removed at the first post-operative visit. Most patients can return to work or school within 7–10 days, and swelling or bruising continues to improve over the following two to three weeks.

FAQs

Those who are self-conscious about the size, shape, or projection of their ears should consider otoplasty. It is also appropriate for individuals with congenital ear deformities or injuries that have altered ear structure.

Results are noticeable immediately after surgery, although swelling and bruising may initially obscure the final outcome. The ears gradually settle into their new position within two to three weeks.

Otoplasty results are long-lasting and typically permanent. Once the ears are reshaped or repositioned, they maintain their improved appearance for life.

Follow your surgeon’s pre-surgery instructions, including any medication or fasting requirements. After surgery, wear your head wrap as directed, keep your head elevated while sleeping, and avoid activities that might bend or bump your ears during recovery.

Normal activities can be resumed by most patients within a week. Temporary swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are normal and subside with time.

You will be evaluated by your surgeon during your consultation and given a plan for achieving natural symmetry and proportion. The procedure generally lasts one to two hours and can be performed under local or general anesthesia. Postoperative care includes wearing a protective head wrap, using prescribed medications, and attending follow-up visits to ensure proper healing and optimal results.
