Rhinoplasty, sometimes called a “nose job,” has been one of the most popular types of plastic surgery for many years. Every nose reshaping case is different, however, so the skill of your surgeon is paramount. Drs. Perrotta and Pellegrino have many years of experience performing successful nose surgeries using state-of-the-art techniques on patients of all ages.

Nose surgery can also help people with a deviated septum or other obstruction to proper breathing, improving the passage of air through the nostrils.

Candidates for Nose Surgery

  • Someone whose nose has an abnormality or deformity due to a birth defect, injury, or disease
  • Someone with an excessively large “hump” or deviated septum on the nose
  • Someone who feels he/she has a cosmetically unattractive nose
  • Someone who feels his/her nose does not “fit” or is out of proportion with other facial features

The Goals

  • A more attractive nose shape
  • A nose that is in better proportion to other facial features
  • Improved air passage and breathing
  • Improved self-image

Initial Consultation for Rhinoplasty

Drs. Perrotta and Pellegrino have developed a discreet and sensitive process for preparing you for nose reshaping. Your consultation is important because you and your plastic surgeon must be “on the same page” regarding the results you want. This is why Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Pellegrino will devote as much time as necessary to discuss your individual goals and needs with you.

Dr. Pellegrino or Dr. Perrotta performs a focused physical examination to provide preliminary recommendations. Once he determines his surgical plan, our aesthetic coordinator will produce a written quote which lists all costs of your proposed surgery so that there are no surprises. At that time, an appointment is set for your pre-op visit.

Pre-Op Visit

Much is covered during your pre-op visit. First, one of our highly trained medical assistants will take pre-op photos. Next, your surgeon will explain the surgical technique to you and thoroughly inform you as to what you can expect, including any potential complications.

Note that all procedures carry potential risks, but rhinoplasty has been performed for many years. Major complications are very rare.

Dr. Perrotta or Dr. Pellegrino will then obtain a more complete medical history from you and perform a final pre-op physical examination. Measurements will be taken, and your vital functions will be checked to ensure that you are physically fit for surgery. Prior to releasing you from your pre-op visit, your doctor and our staff will give you detailed instructions for the time leading up to your surgery, as well as for the time immediately following it.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia. There are two types of nose reshaping surgery:

  • Closed Rhinoplasty: The surgeon makes the incisions inside the nostrils. This approach is more useful if you only desire a nose hump reduction.
  • Open Rhinoplasty: The surgeon makes the incisions across the columella (the strut between the nostrils) and inside the nostrils. This is usually the approach taken by Drs. Pellegrino and Perrotta. The added exposure affords the surgeon a great deal of control and the ability to make exact refinements to the dorsum and tip of the nose.

Post-op Recovery

You can go home the same day with an external cast or splint in place. Your nose may be packed for 24-48 hours, and the splint is usually removed in 7-14 days. Any initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral pain medication. After your procedure, you will follow up with us several times so that we can monitor your healing.

If you require rhinoplasty in order to correct a breathing abnormality, insurance might cover the procedure.
