Neck lift
WHO COULD BENEFIT?
An individual with webs of excess skin and perhaps fat on the neck.
An individual with muscle bands on the neck.
THE GOALS:
More youthful or attractive contour of the neck and jawline.
Improved self image.
THE PROCEDURE:
We use IV sedation or general anesthesia. Selected patients require only local anesthesia.
During the procedure excess fat is removed either by liposuction or direct excision via a tiny incision under the chin. If there are prominent bands of muscle, they are repaired. In one variation of the procedure, excess skin is removed as well.
Incisions can be placed under the chin and/or around the ears, or on the neck itself, depending on the specific goals of surgery and gender of the patient.
After the surgery, the surgeon places a bulky dressing or an elastic neck band. In some cases, drains are utilized.
POST-OP RECOVERY:
Most patients can shower one or two days following the surgery.
Bruising and swelling are usually gone in three weeks after surgery.
Most patients are asked to wear the neck band continuously for several days and thereafter at night for up to several weeks.
OTHER POSSIBILITIES:
If the patient also has skin laxity on the cheeks or jowls, a face lift might be a good alternative or adjunct to a neck lift.
INSURANCE?
Neck lifts are performed for cosmetic reasons. Therefore, they are not covered by insurance.
NOTE
The suitability of a neck lift for an individual is determined during the office consultation. All procedures have risks. Minor complications occur occasionally. Major complications are quite rare.
