Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

The use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is becoming more and more popular in Aesthetic Medicine.  At Peninsula Plastic Surgery we employ its rejuvenating properties to treat thinning hair and skin wrinkling in both men and women.  There is evidence to suggest results are enhanced if PRP injections are used in combination with another modality we use, called micro-needling.  There are other uses of PRP that we can discuss at your visit.

Who Could Benefit from platelet rich plasma?

  • Men with thinning hair or recent onset of balding
  • Women with thinning hair
  • Men or women with facial wrinkles

The Goals

  • Reduction in hair loss
  • Regrowth of new hair
  • Improvement in the appearance of wrinkles

The Procedure

In the office setting, we draw the patient’s own blood.  We then “spin it down” in a specialized centrifuge to separate the multiple layers of blood.  We carefully extract the layer containing the platelet rich plasma, the PRP.

For the treatment of thinning hair, we then use tiny needles to inject this fraction into the scalp.  Your hair follicles become rejuvenated.  We repeat the treatment in  three months.

For improvement in wrinkles, we inject your PRP into the middle layer of skin — the papillary dermis.  Maintenance treatments are helpful here as well.

Post Procedural Care

  • Washing the hair with warm water decreases soreness
  • Avoid topical creams, lotions and shampoo for 24 hours, and for dyes: 48 hours.
  • If you already are using topical solutions, continue them for six months.
