THE LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE:
We usually perform this procedure on an outpatient basis. However, on those occasions when we remove a great deal of fat, we observe the patient overnight in the hospital.We usually utilize IV sedation and local anesthesia. Some patients opt for general anesthesia. Some do well with local anesthetic alone, an approach which saves the patient a significant amount of money.
The procedure is quite simple. First, we inject a solution that numbs the area and prevents excessive bleeding. Next, we insert small suction tubes (canulas) through tiny (3mm) incisions and remove the excess fat. The inserted end of one of these canulas is blunt, a feature that makes them safe, provided they are used by plastic surgeons, not family doctors or internists who have taken a weekend course in liposuction. The other end of the canula is attached, via a flexible hose, to a specialized machine that provides the vacuum which sucks the fat out. We use special techniques which ensure the result is as smooth as possible. Next we close the tiny incisions. The nursing staff applies a compression garment that controls swelling and bruising.
POST-OP RECOVERY FOLLOWING LIPOSUCTION:
The patient goes home with the compression garment. We advise compression for about a month.Initial discomfort is controlled with oral medication.
Bruising and swelling usually subside in 2-4 weeks. The final result takes shape over 2-3 months.
