Selecting ideal surface type for your breast implants

Smooth or Rough?

Breast implants are available with smooth or textured (rough) surfaces.   Due to the current methods used to manufacture textured implants, they end up firmer than smooth implants and normal breast tissue.  Therefore, for garden-variety breast enlargement surgery, most plastic surgeons utilize smooth implants.  Doctors Pellegrino and Perrotta follow this approach. However, there are exceptions.

Once exception is the treatment of capsular conture.  Most clinical studies show the incidence of capsular contracture is lower when textured implants rather than smooth implants are utilized.  Therefore many surgeons, in the face of capsular contracture, especially if it is recurrent, will replace smooth implants with textured ones.

Another exception is when tear-drop shaped implants are utilized.  The body's tissues adhere to the texture of a textured (rough) implant.  This prevents rotation of the implant. As you can imagine, if a tear-drop shaped implant rotates, the breast would appear grossly deformed--the upper pole would look fuller than the lower pole!   Therefore, if a patient desires a tear-drop shaped implant, Dr. Pellegrino or Perrotta will choose a textured implant.

As mentioned above, Doctors Pellegrino and Perrotta routinely utilize smooth implants, and they do so because they are softer than textured implants. However, in the face of capsular contracture, or if the patient desires tear-drop shaped implants, both offer textured implants.

After inserting over a thousand breast implants, you can rest assured either Dr. Pellegrino or Perrotta will choose the ideal implant for you.
